Bower-birds bower

Well hello there fine reader!

Did you have a good weekend? As miserable as Mondays are there are always some good things to look forward to in the week.

That parcel that's due to arrive, the new shoes you plan to wear when it stops raining or seeing your friends next weekend. Mondays don't have to be so bad!

My Monday was made that little bit better by the arrival of this new pattern - you may remember that this pattern was the original that I wanted for my Pattie suit but I couldn't find it to buy at the time.

Also picked up is this neat set of Avantcards for the Yoko Ono exhibit at MCA and the California Design Exhibit at QAG. Both good exhibits for Sydneysiders and Brisbanites respectively.

We have an Avantcard stand at the staff entrance to my work and I always stop to pick up a few even though I don't use them except to remind me of exhibits to see or as bookmarks. I'm not normally a bower-bird for pretty things, but these are one of those things I like to stop to collect.

Do you have certain things you like to stop and keep? Pebbles or things of a certain colour just found on the footpath? I once had a friend who liked to keep peoples notes that they had dropped - shopping lists or messages. Sometimes there were even cryptic ones that we tried to work out and let our imaginations runaway on.

Anyway - I must get back to my sewing! I have 4 dresses with 8 set in sleeves to sew in and I'm really not looking forward to that! When they're all done I'll have an exciting new set of posts and then I can finally get started with my next project - here is a clue!

I'll leave you now with my favourite song from this past weekend - Victoria by The Kinks

Enjoy the week everyone!

  1. I have that suit pattern, it's fab isn't it. Perhaps we should do a joint sewing project once I get around to grading mine down.

When I was at school we used to have a postcard stand in the library, the cards would advertise all kinds of things like upcoming films or products and me and my friends would collect them all. I still pick up postcards now if I see one with a good design, the vintage shops in London often have good ones.

  2. Hi, dear Catherine! I had a fine weekend, thank you, and I hope you did as well.

To answer your question, I like to collect smooth stones. My second grade art teacher instructed the class to find smooth stones around our homes and bring them to school. Our art project was to hand paint the stones and turn them into paperweights. Ever since I have had an appreciation of the feel and form of stones and rocks. At this very moment I have a stone on my desk that I found a few years ago and painted red, blue and green.

I enjoyed "Victoria." Never having heard the song before, I looked up the lyrics and went to a message board where the song's meaning is discussed. Some think the Ray Davies song is sarcastic, denouncing the class system and Downton Abbey estates of the Victorian age and the British Empire's vigorous colonisation. Some think the song is satirical and ironic while others believe it is nostalgic and patriotic, remembering the romanticism and gallantry of Victorian England. What is your interpretation?

Good night to you, dear friend Cat, and have a terrific Tuesday!

    1. Aww i always wanted to do the smooth stones project at school but we never did. but i do like to collect pebbles when we go to the Nepean river sometimes. the water is very clear there and there's lots of tumbled stones.

As for the song - I agree with your first guess - being that this song is part of a concept album, he is describing he Victorian empire as seen by the albums protagonist Arthur. Though Ray is being ironic, i like that he mentions so many of the Empire idioms like the sun never setting and the commonwealth countries. I did get a little patriotic when i first heard it! but i mostly love the melody and the refrain 'Victoria!'

  3. That suit pattern reminds me of a vintage air stewardess's uniform. Bet it'll look wonderful once made up! x

    1. haha! is it bad that i like the 60s air stewardess outfits? They all look like bored office ladies nowadays. I especially liked PSAs pink and orange minis and the Mohawk airlines green, navy and mustard combos!

  4. Love that suit pattern. Why do all '60s separates resemble flight attendant uniforms? No idea, but I love that look!

  5. You're so funny - my nan used to call herself a bower bird (my mums side of the family runs towards slightly hoarding tendencies!) and I haven't heard that phrase for years! Good luck with the sleeves - I really think hand basting, whilst a bit of a drag, really helps to prevent those pesky puckers!

    1. Oh i was hoping that saying would make sense to someone! is it an Aussie thing maybe? I got through most of the sleeves - the easing is really tricky! But interestingly i love hand basting!

  6. Yes, it is an Aussie thing!!! And I am one, for sure....I collect way more than I want to admit!
That suit is a sweetie! I'm sure I have something similar...in my bower bird stash...
Ugh, set in sleeves! I always put those and ironing on fusing off as long as I can!
    Go hard! XXX

Iron on fusing is quick at least! a few seconds and done!
