During my late night trawling of the National Archives of Australia, I came across some images of Australian fashion in the 60's and realised that although we weren't the center of the cultural revolution like London, we still were there doing our own version of the swinging sixties
Here are a few of my favourites

Thank you for the post, Catherine! Those pictures are absolutely amazing! I always wonder about the 60s in Australia but unfortunately is not very easy to find information and pictures. I know a bit about the revival going on in Sydney right now but not about the actual decade. Thank you for sharing! xxx
ReplyDeleteOh im so glad you like it! i always think because we're so far away we get forgotten. Hence why we like to make a big fuss over ourselves! Ill have to keep looking to find more pretty pictures!
DeleteYou and I definitely are in sync this week, dear Catherine, because my current post focuses on 1960s Australia. As you will notice, the third video in my post was shot at the Canberra Civic Square which, at the time, was brand new.
ReplyDeleteAs evidenced by the pictures in your post today, Australia had no shortage of fashion flair during the 60s and I am very proud of you for carrying on the tradition today.
Good night to you, dear friend Cat, and have a super Tuesday and a fine week ahead!
Yes! I did notice that! They must have been so proud of their modern Square to feature it in a few different things. Canberra is probably the most dull place now, unless you're a politician or journalist.
DeleteI'm still looking through the archives and getting a little more patriotic every time. I may have to post some more!
It's very easy to forget about places like Australia when you think of the 60s but these pictures show that it definitely had it's own thing going on. Great post! x
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think most of these are from Australian Wool Boards fashion shoots....
DeleteWool is probably our biggest contribution to fashion!
These are all brilliant and totes fun to look at.
ReplyDeletethanks Marie!
DeleteI know the American and British fashion was very different in the Sixties but the Aussie version looks remarkably alike! So much colour and fun and I love the marabou trimmed cape by Pierre Cardin. x
ReplyDeleteWe do alright don't we!? Someone told me once that Sydney is like the US and Melbourne is like the UK in terms of Fashion sense. The good thing about that is they then go on to say Melbourne people are the best dressed! UK wins!
DeleteHad to stop by to say I loved the 60s retrospective. That last striped dress could easily be worn today!
ReplyDeleteCherie in Phoenix
Thanks! The striped dress is my favourite of the bunch!
DeleteThis is a great post!
ReplyDeleteI used to ask my mum what they wore in the 60s and 70s and was it as cool as TV made it look and she never made it sound very interesting! These photos are pretty cool. And agree with every that the striped dress is something that could be worn today!
My mum was the same. She'd never tell me the fun stories, but one of her friends did which was good, and one of my primary school teachers was a former "hippy". You should totally take a look at the archives! http://photos.naa.gov.au/
DeleteOuah ,i love the last striped dress !!!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous isn't it?
DeleteInteresting post! I am always curious to see what The 1960's were like outside America and UK. You discover a lot of amazing fashion/films/music that way. I just wish I spoke more languages.
ReplyDeleteI agree! i once came across some photos of Afghanistan in the 60s. It looked so normal with record stores and kids in parks. Compare that to now and you would never think it possible
DeleteWow, I love these! I should write a post about Italian fashion in the Sixties... Well, thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteoh nice! Italy was one of the cultural centres in the 60s so im sure there is no shortage of good photos!
