Baby you can drive my car

I’ve been working on this early 60s coat for awhile and I finished the hand stitching this weekend.

Initially it had a collar but I didn’t have enough fabric to make a full front facing so off came the collar!

The fit is similar to the 50s style car coats – it’s shapeless and only has 2 small darts at the back to stop it looking too sack like. The pattern I used was Butterick 2624

I modified the coat pattern so it had longer sleeves, more room in the hips and added some pockets.

I bound the edges with Bias tape and then realised I’d sewn the facings wrong. So in the top corner the bias goes all the way to the edge – not quite right but the coat is not meant to be worn with the lapel open. I added a hook and eye to keep it closed on windy days.
The fabric is a brocade from Tessuti’s in Surrey hills. It was pretty nice to work with and holds its shape well.

I chose not to line is so that I can wear it in Spring and Summer when it’s freezing in the office but boiling hot outside!

Thanks for looking lovelies!

  1. I love this! I've just looked up the pattern, and I may have to purchase it. Dress, top, skirt, AND coat! Have you made any of the other separates included in the pattern?

    1. It's a great pattern right? This was my first vintage pattern so I've made heaps of things from all the pieces. They're very versatile and you can modify them to make more exciting things. The pattern is unprinted so it only has little hole punchs to indicate darts etc. Can't wait to see what you make from it!

  2. Oh this is lovely! I've got a similar pattern from the late 50s that I got for Christmas and I've yet to do anything with it yet x

  3. I love the title of your post, dear Cat, and I love the pattern and style of your coat. You are obviously very skilled and imaginative and the coat looks terrific on you. As Rod Stewart sang, "You wear it well." Happy Friday to you, my new friend!

  6. Love this coat! The pattern is perfect for it and who needs the collar? Haha. I actually love collarless coats.

    I'd totally wear this one.
